The Echo was not his enemy. The Echo was his pain. His fear of failure. His anger at the world for needing him. His exhaustion. And you cannot destroy pain. You can only hold it.

After three weeks of travel—through sandstorms, sandbender raids, and a spirit python that tried to swallow Kavi whole—they found it: a circular pit a mile wide, its walls carved with spiraling symbols that predated any known language.
