So no, I don’t want to “practice my listening skills.” I don’t want to “focus on the actors’ mouths.” I want to lean back, eat my byrek , and read every single word of dialogue as it scrolls by. So the next time you’re watching a film with an Albanian, and you see them reach for the subtitle settings, don’t argue. Just hand them the remote and smile. They are not making a technical choice

So yes, leave my subtitles on. They are proof that we exist in the global conversation. This is the real reason. Look at the kids. The teenagers growing up abroad or even in Tirana, drowning in Hollywood blockbusters and YouTube stars. Maybe even a little unnecessary

Turning them on is a small rebellion against the pressure to assimilate. It’s me saying: My language belongs here too. My culture is not a glitch in the system.

And without missing a beat, I swat their hand away and declare:

“Pse? I kuptojnë të gjithë anglisht,” they say.
